Memory Care

Our secured memory care is specifically designed for those individuals experiencing dementia and other cognitive impairments. Our highly-trained staff works hard to cater to the specific needs of each individual, with the goal to keep residents active and engaged while maintaining their dignity and safety. Specialized programming and structured activities engage residents at all levels of capability. At Kempton of Charleston, we celebrate the daily successes and live in the present with those who entrust us with their care.

Liberty Senior Living has taken steps to implement the teachings and training about dementia by Teepa Snow and the Positive Approach to Care methods. We now have access to a PAC Certified Independent Trainer Professional by the name of Holly Hines to guide learning and skills as supported by his or her certification types. While we are inspired by the content and methods included in the PAC Certification, our organization is solely responsible for the use and implementation of the approved content from PAC.

Regional Dementia Care Coordinator and GEMMS Program Director

Holly Hines has been a part of the Liberty family for over 20 years, spending the majority of her time working directly with residents in our communities. Holly’s true passion in senior living was the engagement and care of our residents with cognitive diagnoses, such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Her dream of exceptional programming for our memory care residents as well as immersive and comprehensive training for our caregivers, encouraged her to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) through the National Council of Dementia Practitioners, as well as a Certified Trainer and Coach with Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care.

As the program Director, Holly provides consistent training and education courses across all Liberty Communities, reinforcing Liberty’s mission of providing residents with the quality care they deserve from compassionate and competent caregivers.

Memory Care Support Group

The hands of caregivers make a world of difference. Our support group program provides several benefits to caregivers supporting someone 60 years of age and older including:

  • Information about resources available to assist in locating services from private organizations
  • Caregiver training, peer support, and counseling to help families cope with the emotional and physical stresses associated with caring for a loved one; this is facilitated through our GEMMS program and trained RNs and LPNs.
  • GEMMS Training which stands for Genuine, Engaging &Meaningful Memory Support. Liberty Senior Living has taken steps to implement the teachings and training about dementia by Teepa Snow and the Positive Approach to Care methods. We now have access to a PAC Certified Independent Trainer Professional by the name of Holly Hines to guide learning and skills as supported by his or her certification types.
  • Respite care for their loved one during meetings; we will provide meaningful life enriching activities for them while you gain helpful knowledge, caregiving tips, and develop meaningful friendships.

Respite Care

Respite care is available for those who need support on a more temporary basis. The responsibility of caregiving can be overwhelming, and a respite stay at our community can provide much needed relief. Respite can also be used is a caregiver goes on an extended vacation, ensuring the resident is well-cared for in their absence.

Respite care service are available for a variety of care needs, and can be a great option after a hospitalization or rehab stay where a resident might not be ready to return to an environment without services.

Our Medicare certified rehabilitation and skilled nursing services provide the services and guidance needed to meet your goals. The Kempton of Charleston offers Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies to assist short-term residents to return to their prior living arrangements and lifestyle. Our state of the art Rehab Gym offers a wide array of modalities to accelerate your recovery and the therapists receive ongoing training to ensure we are providing the highest level of Skilled Therapy Services available.

Making the decision to have elective surgery takes preparation – from choosing a surgeon to identifying what services are needed following the procedure. Our Pre-Registration Program makes it easy to plan the next steps for recovery following an elective surgery. Our Admissions Office requests a surgery date, insurance information, completes the admission paperwork and confirms your room reservation.

  • Cardiac Post-Acute Services
    • We provide individualized, post-acute services to assist and treat patients that have recovered from an acute cardiac event. Our patients will benefit from a skilled level of care that provides medical management and education to better prepare them for health maintenance once home. Our staff has been trained by experts at MUSC on Congestive Heart Failure to ensure we are following the same protocols.
  • Admission evaluations and visits for our residential Assisted Living and Memory Care clients.
  • Physician availability 24/7 for our in-house residents with coordination of care with the professional Kempton of Charleston clinical staff.
  • Appointments available on-site for our residents for a variety of health care needs.

 

Russ Blackwelder Family medicine

Medical Director

Russ Blackwelder, MD, MDiv, CMD

Russ Blackwelder, MD, MDiv, CMD serves as the medical director for Kempton of Charleston. He is the Director of Geriatric Education, Community Geriatrics Section Head, and Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He graduated from medical school and residency at MUSC and is a Certified Medical Director (CMD) through the American Medical Directors Association. He has won the family medicine residency program’s top teaching award and been nominated multiple times for the MUSC College of Medicine’s highest teaching honor. The author of multiple peer-reviewed publications, he also serves as a Board Review Faculty focusing on Geriatrics for the American Academy of Family Physicians Board Review Course. While directing the Geriatrics curriculum for the MUSC Family Medicine Residency since 2015, he has mentored seven graduates who have been accepted to Geriatric Fellowship training. Dr. Blackwelder completed undergraduate education at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, a Master of Divinity at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga, and is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). His clinical interests include Geriatrics, Geriatric education, Palliative Care, and the role of physicians in society.


Eric Matheson MD MSCR

Dr. Eric M. Matheson, M.D. MSCR

Completed his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2001 and his family medicine residency from St. Vincent’s family medicine residency program in 2004. Dr. Matheson completed his master’s in clinical research from MUSC in 2009. His clinical and research interests include nutrition, preventive care, and medical education. He is currently an associate professor and serves as an attending physician at Kempton of Charleston.

Megan Diminich Bunch PA MHS

Megan Bunch, PA-C, is a family medicine provider in Charleston, South Carolina. She is accepting new patients of all ages at University Family Medicine – Peninsula in Downtown Charleston. Megan has been with MUSC for over 10 years collectively and went to PA school at Duke University School of Medicine. Megan will be a wonderful asset to our clinical team here at Kempton of Charleston

All our residents and front-line staff are outfitted with a wearable social bracelet. This bracelet works in tandem with solar-powered, wall-mounted sensors to gather data on resident and staff movement & engagements. With this information, our staff is empowered to focus on enhancing the unique care they provide to each of our residents. This includes more efficiently responding to resident care requests to proactively monitor residents’ social engagement helping staff monitor the health and well being of our residents.
